Another packed house at the Mary Ann Arena left wondering what could have been after a series of missed opportunities left Cromwell sharing the points with St Michaels. Fans were pleasantly surprised by the team not showing their customary slow start by keeping the game tight and not conceding in the first 15 minutes. However, opportunities were in short supply in what was a scrappy opening. Cromwell however soon got into their stride and their short passing game started to create time and space in the middle of the park for the midfield. St Michaels soon learnt that time and space is not something you give Paynter and a delightful through ball put Haughton away but the St Michaels number 4 belied his size and showed great pace in covering back to prevent a shot.

That was a signal for what was to come and Paynter’s starting midfield partners of Whitehead and Higham started hitting the overlapping wingers of Donlan and Ridpath. More chances would come and go as Javed and Haughton stretched the opposition to allow Herriott free reign to terrorise the St Michaels back line. Herriott’s tenacity was unmatched by any other player and the fan favourite was given a great round of applause from the appreciative crowd for another top display.

Cromwell still couldn’t get a firm grip in the game and the additions of Walker and the ever smiling Hackney couldn’t add the goal that was desperately needed. Both showed great energy despite having spent the morning mud wrestling with Warrington, maybe soon it will be their year! Tully and Clarke continued the excellent work and Bailey was in control at the back meaning keeper Mullen had little to do apart from taking the occasional goal kick. St Michaels tried to increase the physicality in the game but after one player made the mistake of running into Tully they soon retreated back into their half. On one occasion there was a brief melee but the referee showed no cards, although that may have been because he’d forgotten to bring them!

Chances were coming thick and fast now but the away keeper had little to actually save, but a great through ball put Walker away with a chance to win the game but he was thwarted by the woodwork.

The end came and the frustration was clear, an opportunity to take 3 points and move clear into 3rd in the table was missed. The opta ranking showed most players scoring only 5 out of 10 with the exception of Herriott, the phone ins that evening made lively listening on the radio. One clear call was for more talking and energy from the players. At one point it was that quiet you could hear the beer being delivered at The Seven Woods. Coach Tully was seen looking longingly in the direction of the pub.

Next week sees a trip to Prescott in what will sure to be a crucial game if Cromwell’s title hopes are to remain in tact.
